.658 5th gear set for Volkswagen 02A and 02J transmissions. Set includes large gear (02Z 311 158A), small gear, (02Z 311 361A), and spring plate for the small gear.

All North American TDI's from 1996 through 2003 came with a .756 5th gear set. The .658 gearset drops RPMs in 5th gear by 13%.

The .658 gearset will work with the NA BEW motored MK4 PD vehicles but cruise control functionality may be lost. This gearset will work in a MKV Jetta TDI with no issues

The proper small spring plate is included so no modification of current spring plates is needed.

Transmission cover gasket is not included but is available.

OEM VW parts come from VW and are clearly marked with the VW logo and part number and/or boxed in VW boxes or bags. While IDParts.com sources many parts directly from manufacturers that supply VW, items marked as OEM VW are purchased from Volkswagen itself.

These comments came from Peter at IDParts and I agree with his comments EXACTLY. I have a bone stock 2002 Jetta TDI sprortwagon which is my "out of town" long-distance traveling car. I live in Houston Tx (flat as a pancake) and installed the less Over Drive 0.681 gear set in 2012. On the highway I'm a comfort driver, not a road racer. I leave that to the race car! If I drove the car in-town I would have changed back to the standard OD. As it is now, every time I take a ramp to another freeway and go below 45 to 50 mph I'm changing gears. Didn't have to do that with the Std OD gear set. As Peter said - lots more gear changing. For in-town usage in a standard TDI car the 0.658, IMHO, would definitely be too tall. Also, I don't seem to get any improved gas mileage. Yes, the engine is rotating slower , but you have to give it more fuel to produce more torque at the slower speed. I don't know if BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption) occurs at max torque, but the car is going about 2000 rpm at 70 mph IMSMC (if memory serves me correctly?). "These gears come out of Transporter vans (T-4) in Europe. Regarding which gear to choose, where do you live? Is it hilly or flat? How fast do you normally drive? I've had the .681 in my car and it's nice if you drive 70 or higher on the highway. Sometimes it's a bit of a pain if you drive a lot on state highways at 45 or 50 because you can be in and out of 4th gear a lot. Unless you drive mostly at 70+ and/or live where it's pretty flat (or have a modified car that makes more power) the .658 may be too tall. Having said that, it sells better than the .681. But for a stock car and normal use my opinion is the .681 is as tall as you would want to go. The .681 drops revs about 300 RPM in 5th, the .658 drops them about 400. 60 MPH with the .681 is around 1750 RPM, with the .658 it's around 1600." Hope this helps. Peter IDParts
