Diesel has been under fire in recent years, predominantly because of changing emissions regulations. Adding DPFs, Urea injection, and more strict engine management has affected diesel economy and maintenance costs. And of course, Volkswagen’s cheating scandal tarnished diesel’s reputation.
Nevertheless, we continue to see new diesel models added to the North American fleet. New Ford and GM light duty pickups, Jeep Wrangler, BMW 5-Series, Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain…all new this year or next. Jaguar/Land Rover offers diesels in most of its models. Chevrolet kept the diesel in its new generation Cruze, and Ford is adding a diesel to the Transit Connect. These are exciting times for diesel enthusiasts.
The diesel watchwords of “Economy/Longevity/Performance” is truer than ever. And despite negative press, new diesels are clean. In a volatile fuel price market, we expect diesels will remain the best choice of long distance drivers and work trucks for years to come.
