Consider purchasing new clips for the swirl flap motor, available.  These are typically soaked in oil and will break when you try to remove them.  There are 4 in total.

Thermostat Information

You will need to remove the thermostat as part of removing the intake manifolds in order to reach the oil cooler.  We strongly recommend using this oppurtunity to replace the thermostat, but if you plan on re-using your existing thermostat please add the thermostat gasket to your cart, available as an add-on.

Coolant

The thermostat will need to be removed for this job, and the intake manifolds have coolant going through them, in addition to the oil cooler.  Failed oil cooler seals may also lead to oil contamination in the coolant.  Therefore it is recommended to drain the cooling system and refill with fresh coolant.

Injector Line Socket

Removing the intake manifolds requires removing the injector lines.  The lines at the injector take a 17mm wrench, but there is not enough clearance to get a wrench around the line.  Therefore, we stock and recommend getting the special 17mm injector line socket below to take off the lines without damaging the lines or injectors.

I FINALLY just replaced my oil cooler seals after ordering this probably 18 months ago. As the description says, expert level repair. Behind the turbo is a ball buster! My advice, take out the cross memeber from the wheel wells and take out the EGR early. It might be a pain but the EGR removal and the crossbar removal frees up so much space. You will still complain about the lack of space, but image trying to do this with all that in your way. In addition to this kit, i HIGHLY recommend the "Intake elbow seal kit." There is no part number, it is inexpensive and you have to tear it all aprt anyway so it is worth the couple of bucks to know you have fresh seals in there. Finally this kit has EVERYTHING you will need. It may not seem obvious where everything goes, but as you tear everything apart i VERY HIGHLY recommend you get a VERY LARGE surface to put everything in a very specific order. I have an 8x5 trailer and put a 4X8 sheet of plywood over it and got smalle 8X11 parts tras .. about 10 ... to put the parts in in order as i removed them. As you take things apart, put the new gaskets in the trays with the old ones. Being meticulous is EXTREMELY important here. This was my first dance with this project and it took me 31 hours to complete. Now keep in mind i was cleaning and porting parts as i was removing. I would guess i had at least 10hours of clean time. And at least 5+ hours just trying to get the bolts behind the turbo to break loose; that is until i removed the EGR and the cross beam ... so take those to things out and you have a 16 hour job... at least that is how short i expect this to be the second time around! Good luck to all who venture down this path! it will be wrought with frustration, but the satisfaction of having the oil cooler, ( and in my case a fixed broken exhaust gasket) done and the sound of a turbo whine for the first time in our 7 years of ownership are nothing short of satisfying! We essentially have a brand new jeep!!

I purchased the oil cooler seals kit and additional parts in order to have a mechanic buddy of mine do the work for me. The MB dealer wanted almost $2500 to do this job. I had read that the 2009 and older models had the orange seals (the ones that degrade quickly) but to my surprise, my 2010 also had the orange seals. It took my mechanic about 12 hours to do the job. Very happy, as always, with idparts and their availability of parts and attention to customer service. - Mike in Michigan.

Used this to do the feared oil cooler seal replacement…everything I needed for reinstalling the turbo to the various seals was included…the kit included seals I would not have thought about. Rebuilt my turbo with a new core while I had it out to address as many possible sources of oil leaks/consumption as possible!
