What our customers say...

I installed the PD lift pump to my ALH a few years ago. The kit was fine although my relays under the hood are a bit of a mess now since not everything fit perfectly with the cover and such. I intend to eventually move it to the relay panel under the dash where there are tons of empty slots that can be used and even one of the empty fuse slots. Hey VW even has a "fuel pump" slot unused by diesels, how convenient! Anyway, I did run into some problems where the ground to the relay had just slight come loose. And it shared the ground to my aftermarket alternator. So I was losing charging power and went on this wild goose chase to figure out what was going on, including sending the alternator in for repair, so it was not a fun time for me and is why I don't recommend messing with the wires under the hood as the instructions say you can do. The worst part is it would show a completed circuit / voltage until there was a load, and then the ground failed. So I fixed that problem by grounding the relay to the chassis instead of sharing wires and it's been fine ever since. One thing I did learn through this is that the car will run fine if the fuel pump fails. I was losing power to both my alternator and the fuel pump and there was never a problem driving, just me noticing the voltage had suddenly dropped to 12v via my charging light. So you don't have to worry about any kind of bypass in case the pump fails. It's not "needed."

This kit was installed by my friend on the car I now own (bought from him). This kit allows for a very clean install, but I recently experienced power loss where the engine would cut out on me for several seconds before coming back. Finally today it died and would not restart. I traced the problem to a non-functioning fuel lift pump. Investigating further I realized that the problem was an open ground on the coil of the fuel pump relay. After printing out the instructions for this kit I verified that everything was installed exactly as is spelled out in the instructions. The issue is a glitch in the instructions... The instructions say to connect the coil ground to one of the black wires in the relay panel; the two large black wires are the LOAD wires from the other relays. One (the smaller one) is the horn power wire, the other is the load reduction power. My friend happened to use the horn wire, and since the horn is going bad so went my lift pump as it was no longer grounded thru the horn! Proper installation requires running a ground back to the ground point under the windshield cowl next to the ECU.

Excellent kit. IDParts have saved me the trouble of gawking at parts schematics hoping to gather all the correct parts. I chose the installation option using the factory relay/fuse box under the hood. The installation went smoothly in large part to the combination of the kit and IDParts' electronic installation guide (PDF). Seized-on wiper arms due to my car's age were the only substantial obstacle I encountered, breaking a $6 parts store wiper puller, but coming off easily with a sturdier tool. The "repair wires" made using VW connectors and the slots in the existing fuse box easy for a clean looking installation. The few improvements I could suggest are minor: a slightly longer pump solenoid signal wire (pink wire) so that the existing wire harness can be followed more closely all the way to the mechanical pump shutoff solenoid. To save a potential hardware store run, the inclusion of a sheet metal screw or two for the pump ground, and a few ring terminals for the relay coil ground, mechanical pump shutoff solenoid, and lift pump ground would be helpful.
