Though they fail with less frequency on the older TDIs, the mass airflow sensors are prone to failure, affecting performance and fuel consumption. Be sure to fully diagnose the problem before assuming it is the MAF, especially on these older cars where failing MAF symptoms can be caused by other issues, such as broken wires or a boost leak.
